In this image, I stand among a backdrop of greenery, partially obscured by shadows that dance across my body. The natural setting represents a return to roots, a journey inward to confront and embrace my inner world. The focal point of the piece is the juxtaposition between two versions of myself: a clear, steady figure standing and looking down at a blurred, kneeling version of me.
The use of Photoshop was integral in creating this duality. The blurred figure on the ground symbolizes the times when anxiety and depression overwhelmed me when my sense of self was distorted and unclear. This depiction of me captures the essence of vulnerability and the struggle with mental health. In contrast, the standing version of me, though still partially shadowed, represents moments of clarity, strength, and resilience. It embodies the times I overcame these internal battles, standing tall and present despite the challenges.
The Yin-Yang aspect of the photo is a crucial element, emphasizing the importance of balance and the interdependence of opposing forces. Just as Yin and Yang are complementary, so too are the experiences of struggle and triumph. Each informs and shapes the other, contributing to a deeper understanding of self. The shadows and light play off each other, enhancing this theme of duality and self-discovery.
"From Within" serves as a visual representation of the delicate balance between vulnerability and strength, and the continuous journey toward self-acceptance and growth.
Below are some other versions of this piece that didn't make it into the museum, but communicate the same concept!
